Her's Maddie at a year and a half. Ain't she cute!
Grandpa Rich

Spring is a time of wide variation in weather in Vermont. These two pictures of the front of our house are two weeks apart. When I last left for a trip to California there was no snow, I came back and there was a foot of snow, a week later there was no snow, then we had the Nor'Easter you heard about and we had another foot and a half of snow. Four days ago we had 81 degrees during the day and last night we had 35 degrees. The poor birds can't figure out what is happening.
But it is all leading in exorably toward spring and lots of green, mosquitos and black flies. Goodie.
Seriously, we are looking forward to the summer and enjoy the seasonal changes.
Thanks Brien. I think I can post...........Got nothin

Finally! It feels so good to be back on site. Here's a view of the Sierras out of our soon to be finished guest room window. Hope that can tempt a few of you to come over that hill to visit us. . . Also, a pic of the four generations of girls in our family: (from the left) Katie (Mom), GG (great-grandma), Madeline (the kid), and Judy (Grandma). We had such a fun visit in March. Maddie and her GG read lots of books and did lots of cleaning.

It's worth mentioning the unhappy events at Virginia Tech earlier this week, since we do have some Hokies amongst us. I'm told tomorrow will be a maroon and orange effect day, and I'll thus need to find some articles of clothing in those colors. I'd ask Maddie to lend me something, but I'm sure it wouldn't fit. Besides, she looks much cuter in her Hokie gear than I ever would.
(Mike, this is a good excuse to wear your orange wobegon t-shirt to work.)
News on the Great Caulfield Ancestor
As some of you may know, Brien is engaged in a little side project to try and discover where Caulfields come from (and if they're all color blind). He was able to trace this Caulfield line back to John P. Caulfield, born in Ireland around 1860 - died in Salt Lake City, Utah on 13 March 1925. John P met and married Elizabeth Hyland in England. Elizabeth was born in Egremont, Cumberland, England (to Irish parents) around 1861. Their first child, Thomas Joseph Caulfield, was born 5 Nov 1883 in Egremont, and sailed to America with his mom (or mum) on the Scythia at the ripe age of 3 months!
They arrived in New York (having departed from Liverpool) on 15 Feb 1884, and met up with John P (who apparently came to the US sometime in 1883 to set up house). They had more children: John P Jr born in Michigan in 1887, Margaret born in Michigan in 1891, James Hyland born in Butte, Montana in 1894, Andrew born in Montana in 1896, Marie born in Montana in 1898 and Joseph Parnell born in Montana in 1900. (Joseph Parnell is the reason we don't think John P's middle name is Parnell - but we don't know what the "P" stands for. Maybe John P and Elizabeth had so many kids, they lost track of what they named them! After all, their first is Thomas Joesph and their last is Joseph Parnell.)
Anyway - Thomas Joseph Caulfield married Mary Ellen O'Brien (born about 1888 in Montana) and had Thomas Francis Joseph Caulfield on 30 Aug 1909 in Butte, Montana before moving to Utah and having a bunch more kids. We all know the rest from here.
The generation before John P - the great ancestor - remained a mystery to Brien until tonight...when we received the copy of his death certificate from the Utah Dept of Public Health.
John P. Caulfield was born on 18 Apr 1859 (happy birthday great, great grandpa) in "Anna" (clearly some person in Utah's attempt to spell an Irish town name) Ireland. His parents were (surprise!) Thomas Caulfield and Margaret Fleming, of Ireland. John P was a retired mining man and died of "pulmonary fibrosis tubercular - probably contracted in mines" - again, not a surprise to any of us I'm sure. We still don't know what that "P" stands for, but we have a birth date and a phonetic spelling of a parish name to chase in Ireland.
If any of you are interested in learning more about what we've put together so far - we'll gladly invite you to our ancestry.com tree - where we have a collection of census records, military draft cards and other records compiled on members of the Caulfield clan.
Have a good night, all...and I'm kidding about the color blind thing (in case anyone was seriously wondering)
Happy to see Caulfield.net back. Thanks Brien.
I still can't post comments with all combinations of user name and password. It keeps telling me wrong password, but I've never used any other passwords. Brien, can I start all over?
Commentless Rich
p.s. Is this a color blindness test? I was traumatized in 9th grade when the teacher was flashing these color dot cards and all the other kids were shouting numbers that I couldn't see. The teacher sent me to the nurse!
Until then I thought I was perfect.
Happy belated birthday, Mike!
We jsut returned home from a week off, camping in Northern California. We got sun, rain, and snow! We got so absorbed into vacation mode, I nearly forgot Mike's bday, so we plan to do some celebrating now that we are home!

Happy Birthday Tosh! I thought this image was especially appropriate since his name sign had to do with riding trikes and bikes.
Hi all - this is a test, and also an opportunity to say happy birthday to our April babies: namely Kate, Mike, and Tosh (who would have been legally drinking this year at 21 if he were here!) Wow. Did I miss anyone? If so - sorry! and happy birthday.
I understand many are having trouble posting pics and comments to caulfield.net. This is truly unfortunate. I have Brien working on it, but considering it's taken him 3 weeks to change a lightbulb, I'm not optimistic about his speed with caulfield.net.
I guess he has turned on comment-moderating, which means he has to validate all comments before they appear on the blog (and thus, we won't be spammed by miscellaneous idiots trying to sell us viagra or whatever). But, it shouldn't affect picture posting. Frustrating!
Stay tuned...
