Fun at Disneyland

Last weekend Linda and I and several friends went for a three day backpacking trip in the Adirondacks. We hiked into a remote lodge (John's Brook Loj) run by the Adirondack Mountain Club (sleeping in a bed rather than a tent) and then intended to day hike from there to the summit of a 5,100 foot peak (which is high for back here) called Haystack. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate, and it was 40 degrees and raining when we hit the 3.4 mile point of the 5.4 mile hike in, and the temperature was dropping. It took a very short discussion to decide to call it a day and turn around. It was a good thing, because the only two people from the lodge that made it said it was blowing 50 mph at the top. We did have a great time despite the weather, and saw some pretty country. The Adirondacks are really spectacular.

A Bit of History

I was looking through albums to find pictures for the Camp Caulfield games, ran across this one, and thought it would be be fun to share it with the "next generation". This is Tom, John, Rich and Tim with Aunt Katie (our mother's sister) and Uncle Sam [Errett (sp?)] taken in about 1951 at Live Oak Park near Fallbrook, CA. Katie and Sam were wonderful people and lived in Fallbrook the from the time I first remember. Fallbrook was a sleepy little town that had a stoplight once, but they had taken it out. It is about thiry miles east of Long Beach. The Caulfield family visited them almost annually in one configuration or another for most of my childhood. Katie would always play the piano for us and Sam would crack corny jokes. Sam was a Linotype setter at the local paper and had a great fix-it shop out back of the house. Mother and Katie would have toast in the morning with avocado straight off the tree in the back yard, which I thought was gross. Growing up then was soooo different from kids growing up today. Maybe that is a good subject for stories around the camp fire.

April 23rd, 2011, Braintree, VT. When I went to bed last night they were predicting rain showers. I was considering going over to the boat to take off the cover if it hadn't rained yet, since it is due to be launched next week. I woke up this morning and couldn't hear rain, so I got up to get and early start. .... Then I looked out the window. It was all brownish green yesterday.

It probably won't stick ... probably ... at least that is what we think.

Snow isn't much good with no base under it, you can't even ski on it.

Guitar practice and a good book seem like a good idea for today.

When Tom passed away, a friend gave me some bulbs to plant, so that every year in spring we would have a reminder of Tom. It is really wonderful, because they are the first flowers to bloom each spring, and they are just in the right hand view from the deck near the white birches. Bright colors amongst a brown landscape just recovering from winter.

A nice reminder of a person that was important to all of us, ... and that life goes on.

The kids keep getting taller (so tall for their ages!). Grannie Annie isn't getting taller. I don't think she is getting shorter, though, which is a good thing.

Linda and I just joined two other couples from the Randolph area for a trip to the Adirondacks to stay at an Adirondack Mountain Club lodge near Lake Placid NY, about three hours from our house. The Adirondacks park and mountains are as fine as wilderness gets, both summer and winter. It is the largest park in US.

These pictures are in reverse order, the bottom one is Avalanche Lake, which we skied into on the first day. What you are seeing here is the frozen lake that you can ski across in the winter. It is a wonderful view with shear cliffs on both sides.

The lodge (loj as they spell it) is an old family style and establishment with accommodations that range from a bunk room in the attic to private rooms (all with dormitory type baths accommodations down the hall), and family style dining. What a treat.

The top picture is at the top of Mount Jo, that we hiked to on the second day. It gives a great view of Mount Marcy (the highest mountain in NY at ~5,300 ft) and the second highest mountain (which I can't remember the name of).

Winter is drawing to a close here, with many days in the 30s and 40s, and the snow melting. Sad, but that means spring and summer are coming, providing visions of sailing and kayaking.
