Last weekend Linda and I and several friends went for a three day backpacking trip in the Adirondacks. We hiked into a remote lodge (John's Brook Loj) run by the Adirondack Mountain Club (sleeping in a bed rather than a tent) and then intended to day hike from there to the summit of a 5,100 foot peak (which is high for back here) called Haystack. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate, and it was 40 degrees and raining when we hit the 3.4 mile point of the 5.4 mile hike in, and the temperature was dropping. It took a very short discussion to decide to call it a day and turn around. It was a good thing, because the only two people from the lodge that made it said it was blowing 50 mph at the top. We did have a great time despite the weather, and saw some pretty country. The Adirondacks are really spectacular.

A Bit of History

I was looking through albums to find pictures for the Camp Caulfield games, ran across this one, and thought it would be be fun to share it with the "next generation". This is Tom, John, Rich and Tim with Aunt Katie (our mother's sister) and Uncle Sam [Errett (sp?)] taken in about 1951 at Live Oak Park near Fallbrook, CA. Katie and Sam were wonderful people and lived in Fallbrook the from the time I first remember. Fallbrook was a sleepy little town that had a stoplight once, but they had taken it out. It is about thiry miles east of Long Beach. The Caulfield family visited them almost annually in one configuration or another for most of my childhood. Katie would always play the piano for us and Sam would crack corny jokes. Sam was a Linotype setter at the local paper and had a great fix-it shop out back of the house. Mother and Katie would have toast in the morning with avocado straight off the tree in the back yard, which I thought was gross. Growing up then was soooo different from kids growing up today. Maybe that is a good subject for stories around the camp fire.

April 23rd, 2011, Braintree, VT. When I went to bed last night they were predicting rain showers. I was considering going over to the boat to take off the cover if it hadn't rained yet, since it is due to be launched next week. I woke up this morning and couldn't hear rain, so I got up to get and early start. .... Then I looked out the window. It was all brownish green yesterday.

It probably won't stick ... probably ... at least that is what we think.

Snow isn't much good with no base under it, you can't even ski on it.

Guitar practice and a good book seem like a good idea for today.

When Tom passed away, a friend gave me some bulbs to plant, so that every year in spring we would have a reminder of Tom. It is really wonderful, because they are the first flowers to bloom each spring, and they are just in the right hand view from the deck near the white birches. Bright colors amongst a brown landscape just recovering from winter.

A nice reminder of a person that was important to all of us, ... and that life goes on.

Linda and I just joined two other couples from the Randolph area for a trip to the Adirondacks to stay at an Adirondack Mountain Club lodge near Lake Placid NY, about three hours from our house. The Adirondacks park and mountains are as fine as wilderness gets, both summer and winter. It is the largest park in US.

These pictures are in reverse order, the bottom one is Avalanche Lake, which we skied into on the first day. What you are seeing here is the frozen lake that you can ski across in the winter. It is a wonderful view with shear cliffs on both sides.

The lodge (loj as they spell it) is an old family style and establishment with accommodations that range from a bunk room in the attic to private rooms (all with dormitory type baths accommodations down the hall), and family style dining. What a treat.

The top picture is at the top of Mount Jo, that we hiked to on the second day. It gives a great view of Mount Marcy (the highest mountain in NY at ~5,300 ft) and the second highest mountain (which I can't remember the name of).

Winter is drawing to a close here, with many days in the 30s and 40s, and the snow melting. Sad, but that means spring and summer are coming, providing visions of sailing and kayaking.

Linda's family from Rochester NY, Buffalo NY and Boston MA just came to VT to ski for the winter school holiday. Eight people in all from 8 to 77 years of age. Here is a picture of Linda and her brother Phil at the top of Mount Ellen. Phil, 77 was skiing with three of his grand sons, the youngest being 8 years old. Charlie, the 8 year old we nick named Rocket Boy when he did a blue run top to bottom without making a turn. When we finally caught him near the bottom and asked why he wasn't doing any turns, he said he was both cold and hungry and wanted to get to the lodge.

The cold part was real, as this particular day started at 0 degrees and climbed into the teens. Despite the cold the skiing was great and everyone seemed to have a great time.

Thought we should introduce the rest of the Caulfield clan to its newest addition. Chloe is a three year old female from the VT humane society, whose prior staff decided they had an allergy to cats. We got her in November and we are acclimatizing to her presence quite nicely.

She may have been an indoor cat in her prior home, because she shows little interest in getting outside, but that could just be intelligence, since the temperature is in the teens out there.

We are happy to have her.

It seems like every time we add a picture to the site, is is cloudy and/or snowing, so I thought I would show you that it isn't always like that here. Last weekend, with some friends, we snowshoed to the top of Rochester Mountain, a total of 2,950 feet high. You can see it from our deck. In this picture our house would be over my right shoulder, and if you look closely you will see the snow capped White Mountains in New Hampshire over Sharon's left shoulder, just on the horizon. That is 70 miles distant.

Unfortunately, after a dump of about 30 inches of wet snow about two weeks ago, we have had nothing but warm weather (30s and low 40s) so the snow is deminishing rapidly.

Oh well, on to spring and summer things.

This is Dan (Phil and Carol's son) and his fiancee Carolyn (sorry Carolyn, not a great picture of you), with Carol in the near background and Tim in the far background. We skied all three days they were here, and the evenings involved family dinners, lively games of "cheating" uno, sing-alongs and early bed times (especially for us elders). Great fun, but I am still recovering!

This is the second year that Linda's brother and all his family have come to VT for a ski holiday. This picture shows (left to right) Phil, Charlie, Jake, Carol, Linda, Tim (the only non Morse), Elliot, and Adam. Age range from 7 to 76. The only ones missing from the picture are Phil and Carol's son Dan and his fiancee Carolyn (see above). We didn't succeed in getting everyone in one picture this year. Also, this is the first year that Elliot and Jake can out ski all of us except their father, Adam. Sigh, it was inevitable, but it still hurts.

Linda and I have taken up telemark skiing this year (Free the Heal!) and are enjoying it alot. These are some pictures of us today at Mad River Glen, one of Vermont's legendary resorts. The logo for Mad River is "Mad River Glen, Ski it if you can". While we could use more snow the skiing is good.
